Mascots

Rolly and Palette.

Two of the people who work here are not people. One is a roll of sod and one is a pallet, and they do genuinely different jobs. Rolly answers what you ask him. Palette tells you the thing you did not know to ask.

What Palette knows
Rolly, the Sod Friend mascot: a smiling roll of sod

Rolly · the one who answers

Rolly.

A roll of fresh-cut sod with a face on it, and the reason the phone is not the only way to get a straight answer at ten at night. Ask him which grass suits a shady yard, have him measure and price it, and let him build your estimate. Order through Rolly and he throws in a free irrigation check and a maintenance credit.

He is honest about what he does not know. When a question needs a person, he says so and gets you one.

Measure with him

Palette, the Sod Friend mascot: a winking wooden pallet wearing a bow

Palette · the one who volunteers

Palette.

A pallet, which means she is the part of the order that actually arrives at your house. She weighs 2,500 to 3,000 pounds wet, she carries 450 square feet of grass, and she has opinions about your driveway. Yes, the spelling is on purpose.

She handles the questions nobody thinks to ask until the truck is already in the street: how much extra to order, where the forklift can set her down, whether the gate is wide enough, and what has to be finished before she lands.

Everything she knows Play her game

A roll and
a pallet.

Everything in this business arrives as one of two shapes. Sod leaves the farm as a roll and reaches your house on a pallet, so those are the two things a sod company is made of. Giving them faces was the short walk from there.

Palette’s tips,
all in one place.

These are the notes she leaves around the site. Every one is the kind of thing that only comes up on a delivery morning, which is too late.

Ask Palette.

How much extra should I order?

Order 5% over what you measured. Yards are never rectangles, and every curve, tree ring, and walkway edge costs you a piece off the end of a roll. Coming up half a pallet short is not a same-afternoon fix, because it means booking another cut, and that sod lands 24 to 48 hours after it.

What do I leave out of the measurement?

Only measure what you actually want grass on. Subtract the driveway, the patio, the beds, the pool, and the shed pad. People trace the whole lot and end up with two pallets they have nowhere to put.

How many pallets is my yard?

One pallet covers 450 square feet. Take your square footage, add 5% for trim, divide by 450, and round up. A partial pallet is still a whole pallet, so the last one usually has some left over.

How heavy am I, really?

Confirm the loaded pallet weight before pickup. Check your vehicle’s loading label, rated payload, and axle limits, including passengers, equipment, and other cargo. Truck class does not establish safe pallet capacity. Choose delivery if capacity is uncertain.

Where should the truck set me down?

Somewhere flat, close to the yard, and out of your car's way for a day. The forklift places pallets on the driveway or the curb. Concrete is best: a pallet parked on the lawn for a day leaves a yellow rectangle you will be looking at for weeks.

How long can I sit before you lay me?

Install within 24 hours of delivery, and the same day in summer heat. A stacked pallet cooks from the middle out, so the rolls in the center yellow first. Keep the stack shaded and damp until it goes down.

When should I order for a weekend?

Order by Wednesday. Sod is cut to order, so the farm cuts at first light and it is normally on your driveway 24 to 48 hours from the cut. Rain can push a cut back a day, and we text you the moment we know.

Will the truck actually fit?

Tell us about the gate, the slope, the low branches, and the parked cars before delivery day rather than on it. A flatbed with a forklift on the back needs room to swing. If the only way into the back yard is a narrow side gate, the pallets stop at the driveway and the rest is a wheelbarrow.

What should be done before I show up?

Old turf out, ground graded away from the house, and every sprinkler zone tested. Do it before delivery day, not after. Sod that lands on unprepped clay sits there drying out while somebody goes to rent a sod cutter.

What happens the minute I'm unrolled?

Water promptly after laying, then lift a corner to check that moisture has reached the soil underneath. Check beneath the sod and keep the root zone moist without saturation. Adjust watering to weather and rooting progress, within your water provider’s current rules and any approved allowance.

What do I do with a leftover pallet?

Lay it anyway. The bare strip by the mailbox, the alley side, the dirt under the trampoline. Sod does not keep, so a half pallet left in the driveway on Sunday is a half pallet of compost on Tuesday.

Do I need topsoil under me?

On compacted clay or new-construction fill, yes. An inch across the lawn is about one cubic yard per 324 square feet. Sod on prepped soil roots in 10 to 14 days; sod laid straight onto clay can take a month.

They both work for free.

Rolly answers around the clock and Palette never charges for advice. The sod costs money. Everything they tell you does not.
