Quick answer

Is Zoysia right for a DFW yard?

Yes, if you want a soft, dense lawn and can give it four or more hours of sun. Zoysia costs more per pallet than Bermuda and grows slower, which means less mowing and a thicker carpet, but it takes longer to root and dislikes wet feet. It is the right call for HOA front yards in Plano, Preston Hollow, and the Park Cities, and for anyone who walks barefoot on their lawn.

Zoysia questions.

Does Zoysia grow in shade?

Part shade, yes. Palisades and Zorro handle four to five hours of sun. Deep shade under a big pecan is still St. Augustine territory.

Why does Zoysia cost more than Bermuda?

It grows slowly, so the farm carries it longer before it is ready to cut. That same slow growth is why you mow it half as often.

How long does Zoysia take to root?

Two to three weeks in warm weather with daily watering, longer in spring or fall. Keep traffic off it until it resists a tug.

How much does Zoysia sod cost installed in DFW?

Typical installed range is $800-1,000 / pallet installed, including prep. Delivery-only pallets start at $365.

Not the right fit?

Yards change from the sunny front to the shady back. Plenty of DFW homes run two grasses.
