Is St. Augustine right for a DFW yard?

Yes, if the yard is shaded. St. Augustine is the only grass we sell that holds under pecans and live oaks with four hours of sun, and it stays green longer into fall. It needs more water than Bermuda and does not like heavy foot traffic. It is the right call for Lakewood, Ridglea, Tanglewood, central Arlington, and east Plano yards under mature trees.

Raleigh is what most DFW St. Augustine lawns are. It handles our winters better than any other St. Aug and thrives in the dappled shade under oaks and pecans.

How much shade can St. Augustine take?

Raleigh holds at four to six hours of sun; Palmetto goes lower than that. Neither wants full, all-day shade with no dappled light.

Is St. Augustine cold hardy in North Texas?

Raleigh and Palmetto are, and they are what we deliver. Floratam is the one to avoid north of Waco; a hard freeze can take it out.

Can I mix St. Augustine and Bermuda?

Yes, and plenty of DFW yards do: St. Augustine under the trees, Bermuda in the sun, a straight cut at the seam. Mow each at its own height.
