Plan establishment watering before installation

New sod may need more frequent watering than an established lawn. Local rules can limit the days, hours, and methods you use.

Check both the normal schedule and the current drought stage. Do not assume that a new lawn automatically qualifies for an exemption.

Two soil cutaways compare wet leaves over dry soil with water reaching the roots.

Check below the green surface

Lift a corner gently. The soil beneath the sod tells you more than the appearance of the leaves.

Check the official rules for your city

The summaries below retain the source-check dates shown on our city pages. Open the official link for the current rules before installation.

Dallas

Dallas sprinkler irrigation follows assigned days, at most twice weekly, with no sprinkler watering from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hand watering and soaker hoses are permitted on any day under the city’s conservation guidance. Check current restrictions and any required new-landscape variance before installation.

Plano

With a variance, yes, for up to 30 days. Plano asks for twice-a-week watering from April 1 through October 31 and no sprinklers between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Petition Public Works in writing before install day. Outside those months the city sets no schedule.

Mansfield

Yes, and there is nothing to apply for. Mansfield’s drought contingency plan states that new sod, seed, or hydromulch has no watering restrictions for the first 30 days while it establishes. The standing rule after that is no sprinklers between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., every day, year round. Assigned watering days only appear if the city moves to Stage 1.

Complete the checks before delivery

  1. Confirm the rules for the property’s water provider.
  2. Check whether new sod needs a variance or other approval.
  3. Apply before booking an installation that depends on that approval.
  4. Test every sprinkler zone.
  5. Save the written conditions and approved dates.

Allow for processing time. Contact the water department if the published instructions do not answer your question.

Sprinkler inspection, catch cups, and soaking soil show three coverage checks.

Inspect coverage before setting runtime

Run each zone, compare collected water, and check for runoff. Repair coverage before increasing the timer.

Fit the watering plan to the allowed times

Keep the root zone moist while the sod establishes. Use the watering guide to check moisture and rooting.

Schedule watering within the permitted windows. An approval may change allowed days without removing every other restriction.

Check rules for hand watering and drip separately. Do not assume those methods have the same limits as automatic sprinklers.

Three soil cutaways show watering, a pause for infiltration, and another short cycle.

Water, pause, then reassess

Shorter cycles can help water soak in before runoff starts. Keep every cycle within your permitted watering window.

Recheck when the drought stage changes

A new drought stage can change assigned days, allowed methods, or new-landscape allowances. A previous approval may have limits during stricter stages.

Check the current notice before adding more sod. If the required watering is not permitted, discuss a later installation date.

Three turf scenes show mild growing weather, summer heat, and winter dormancy.

Plan for the season

Warm conditions support rooting. Heat increases moisture checks, while cold conditions slow growth.

Ask about the new-landscape provision

Water providers may have a specific process for establishing new grass. The terms and approval requirements differ.

Questions people ask

Is there one watering rule for all of Dallas-Fort Worth?

No. Assigned days, permitted methods, and new-landscape allowances differ. Check the official rules for the property’s water provider.

Do I need a variance to water new sod?

That depends on the city and current drought stage. Check the new-landscape provision and get any required approval before installation.

How long does a variance take?

Processing time varies. Check with the water department and apply before scheduling an installation that depends on the approval.

What happens if I just water anyway?

Watering outside the applicable rules can lead to enforcement. Confirm permitted methods and any new-landscape allowance before setting the schedule.

Can I water by hand outside the allowed hours?

Some cities treat hand watering differently from sprinklers. Check the current rules for the specific method rather than assuming an exemption.
