How much is a pallet of sod?
A pallet of sod from Sod Friend costs $259 to $380 for the grass alone. The variety sets the price. Each pallet covers 450 square feet and weighs about 2,500 to 3,000 pounds, so it arrives by truck and forklift rather than in the back of a pickup. Delivery is quoted separately.
| Grass | Pallet price (material) | Installed |
|---|---|---|
| Bermuda (7 varieties) | $269 to $309 | from $850 / pallet installed |
| Zoysia (4 varieties) | $375 to $380 | from $850 / pallet installed |
| St. Augustine (4 varieties) | $259 to $359 | from $850 / pallet installed |
Within a family, the price follows the cultivar. Prices change with farm and fuel costs, so the current price for each variety is listed on our sod page. If you are still choosing a grass, the grass comparison covers sun, shade, and wear.
How much does one pallet of sod cover?
One pallet covers 450 square feet. To find your pallet count, measure the area you want grass on, subtract beds, driveways, and patios, add 5% for trimming around curves and edges, then divide by 450 and round up.
| Lawn area | With 5% trim | Pallets |
|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 525 sq ft | 2 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 1,050 sq ft | 3 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 2,100 sq ft | 5 |
| 3,000 sq ft | 3,150 sq ft | 7 |
| 5,000 sq ft | 5,250 sq ft | 12 |
| 8,000 sq ft | 8,400 sq ft | 19 |
We sell whole pallets, so the last one usually leaves a little extra. Lay it on bare strips rather than storing it, since sod does not keep. For an irregular yard, trace it on the satellite measuring tool or follow the steps in how much sod you need.
What comes on a pallet of sod?
A pallet is a stack of freshly cut sod on a wooden base. Farms cut sod either as slabs, which are short rectangles stacked flat in layers, or as rolls, which are longer strips rolled up and stacked on their sides. Sod Friend delivers both. Which one you get depends on the grass, the time of year, and the farm. Either way, you order by coverage, not by piece count, because piece size varies.
Each piece carries a thin layer of soil under the grass. That soil holds the roots together during transport, and it is most of the weight.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
A pallet of sod weighs about 2,500 to 3,000 pounds. Moisture causes the biggest swing, and thicker soil or a larger pallet adds weight too. Lukas Nursery gives a wider range of 2,500 to 4,000 pounds, depending on how moist the pieces are when cut. A pallet cut after rain sits at the heavy end.
Why the weight matters for pickup and delivery
Before you plan to haul a pallet yourself, compare its weight with your vehicle’s rated payload on the door-jamb label. Count passengers, tools, and anything else in the bed against that number, and check the axle ratings too. A truck’s size or class does not tell you its safe capacity. If the rated payload is below the pallet weight, or you are not sure, it is not a safe load.
That is why sod usually arrives on a flatbed with a forklift. Plan where the pallet goes before delivery day:
- On concrete: Set pallets on the driveway or at the curb, close to the lawn. A pallet left on grass leaves a dead rectangle underneath.
- Room to unload: The truck and forklift need space. Tell us about slopes, low branches, narrow gates, and parked cars.
- Out of the way: Keep the spot clear of the cars you need that day.
Do not leave a pallet sitting. Stacked sod heats up from the center, so install it the same day it arrives in summer heat, and keep waiting pallets shaded and damp. Have the ground prepared before the truck shows up. Our step-by-step guide to laying sod yourself covers the order of work. We recommend installing sod where irrigation is close at hand and available for use.
What do delivery and installation cost?
Delivery runs $95 to $250, depending on your address and fuel. That puts the pallet on your driveway or curb, and you lay it.
Installation starts at $850 a pallet and goes up with the grass and the prep the yard needs. An installed price covers the sod, laying, and rolling, plus the lawn prep the yard needs: stripping old turf, grading, topsoil, and haul-away. The grass you pick and the prep the yard needs are why installed prices start at $850 a pallet and go up from there; a yard that needs no prep lands at the bottom. A pallet drop is just the pallet.

Questions people ask
How many pallets of sod do I need for 2,000 square feet?
Five. Add 5% for trimming to get 2,100 square feet, divide by 450, and round up to whole pallets.
Can I haul a pallet of sod in a pickup?
Only if the vehicle’s rated payload and axle limits cover the pallet plus passengers and cargo. A pallet weighs about 2,500 to 3,000 pounds, more when wet. Choose delivery if capacity is uncertain.
How long can a pallet of sod sit before it is installed?
Install it the day it arrives in summer heat, and within 24 hours otherwise. Keep waiting pallets shaded and damp.
Is delivery included in the pallet price?
No. Delivery runs $95 to $250, depending on your address and fuel.
